“For me, success is defined by how I live my life. Whatever I’m doing, whether I’m’ making music or doing something else it is really how much I can really give 100% of my self to whatever it is or whoever it is. I really believe that success is living from your heart, living your passion, living your dream – , but not selfishly – in a way of service, I really believe that service is something that we really rarely talk about in life and I really believe we are here to give rather than to take. So, I think success is measured in how much I am able to give each day.”
“That’s how I look at my life now.”
Certainly each of us has our own definition of success. And each of us feel our defining values are important, right? But do we decide to have the courage to prioritize our values as we should? It should be a pretty straightforward and easy thing, but we all know better, right?
It’s difficult for me to watch someone give up on what’s important to them. And it doesn’t happen all at once. not usually. There are several enemies to our dreams. Many do not intend to take us away from them. Some people absolutely intend to divert us from our purpose.
Let’s use Tom as an example. Tom wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up. As a child he played with his toy firefighter set. As he got older he saw firefighters as heroes and wanted to have a life where he saved people in need. But through a combination of not really having a plan, going along with the wishes of others and influences that even went to the subconscious level, the idea of being a firefighter started to become impractical, illogical, not a respectable way to make a living.
Over time, Tom moves further and further away from this idea. He gets a “career” and becomes dependable and sensible and of course cynical. And late at night, when no one else is around Tom realizes he no longer knows who he is.
Don’t worry, there’s hope for Tom. As long as he has a pulse, there’s still time. And if Tom needs support when he’s ready to make a change, either myself or someone like me will be there. As Will Smith says:
“Once you decide, you can tell the universe to move out of the way.”
